A Thrifted Jacket & You May Now Kill the Bride by Kate Weston

You May Now Kill the Bride by Kate Weston

Where do I love to read? Everywhere. The beach, the library, a cute café, out for a solo sushi lunch, at the bar with a dirty martini. Hot, literary girls know that the best thing you can carry around with you is a book. (And a Rhode lip treatment.) When my bag allows it—ie: when I’m not slinging a micro 2000s-inspired purse over my shoulder, as I often do—I always throw a book in there. After all, as a voracious reader, I always have one or two on-the-go at any given time.

In my Fashion/Fiction series, I’m giving a look at what I’m reading and wearing at any given time. From thrift store finds and sustainable style to rom-com novels and phycological thrillers, here are the outfits I’ve loved putting together and the pages I haven’t been able to stop turning.

A thrifted DKNY shearling jacket found at Goodwill's The Loft

Fashion

I went to Goodwill in search of homewares the other day and while I was waiting for an employee to check if a floor lamp with no tag was actually for sale or part of the shop’s decor, I went rifling through the racks of clothing. It’s a bit difficult to shop right now with a 19-week baby bump, so I haven’t been looking for anything that can’t fit me throughout my pregnancy.

For example, I saw a pair of size 6 DKNY leather pants that I would’ve snatched up in a heartbeat if I was at my pre-pregnancy size. But I don’t know what my body is going to be like after birth this time or what kind of bounce forward I’m going to be able to achieve with three kids eating up my workout time.

But then I saw this jacket. Oh my god. I had to have it. It’s a size XL, which is perfect for me right now. It zips up over my belly and there is still room to grow! It was in perfect condition and guess how much it cost? $28. Yes, you read that right. There was no way I was going to leave it behind. I snatched it up along with the lamp, which was, in fact, for sale.

Before picking the twins up from preschool on the day I wore the outfit above, I had to pop by CVS to pick up a prescription. The woman working behind the counter told me she loved my jacket and I said thank you. She grabbed my medication and then said, “I just have to ask, because it’s so nice, where did you get it?” If she hadn’t been wearing a mask when I told her I bought it at Goodwill, I swear her jaw would’ve hit the floor. I love shocking people with my thrifted finds.

You May Now Kill the Bride

Fiction

You May Now Kill the Bride by Kate Weston

This book was fantastic. So much drama, scandal, innumerable secrets. It’s set in London and follows five friends from kindergarten to adulthood, with most of it taking place in the present day and a few pointed flashbacks to get the full picture of their friendship. Or perhaps frenemyship is more accurate.

There are a lot of characters to keep up with, but they’re all so different, it’s easy to differentiate and remember who they are. And you’ll love to hate them. Or hate to love them. Both? Sometimes you want to slap them and other times you wouldn’t mind splitting a bottle of wine with one or two.

I can honestly say I did not see the twist at the end coming! The author did an excellent job at keeping us (the readers, of course) contemplating multiple scenarios . . . And then they all turned out to be wrong, of course. My only issue with this book is that I wish I could have kept reading. I want to know what happens with the characters next.

Places I read You May Now Kill the Bride: in bed before sleep, in the car while plugged in at the super charger, at the library while my kids browsed for their own books, on the couch at home.
