3 Things I'd Do Differently With My Next Novel
Surprise! I’m writing a new novel. Well, maybe it’s not that big of a surprise if you follow me on social media. And I am an author after all. I need to write. It’s like a release of energy and emotion for me. However, there are definitely things I’d do differently with my next novel versus The Manhattan Mishap.
Not to make excuses, but The Manhattan Mishap was my first novel ever and it was kind of a trial run. I mean, I didn’t have a clue about publishing a novel. Until I did it. And now I know what I’d definitely do differently the next time around.
Curious about my upcoming chick-lit book? First of all, it’s tentatively called She Looks Good. I love the title for now but who knows, it might change by the time it gets published. The story follows Erin Emyrs, a former fashion stylist turned slay-at-home mom, as she navigates life in a new city with a shady but disgustingly hot husband and a too-cute-for-words toddler daughter. I have about three other novels that are either completed or in the process of being written. However, She Looks Good feels like the right one to release first. It just feels… special.

I’d hire a graphic designer
My publisher had a graphic design team and I was allowed one or two revisions. It wasn’t enough. Not nearly enough. I ended up feeling pressured to go with the best cover that we had at the time, but didn’t get to explore other options. Also, I didn’t like any of the suggestions that they sent through. Which was super unfortunate. So, I had to essentially design the cover myself and I am not a graphic designer. By any means.
I would get more feedback from readers
Of course, I’d still get an “editor’s evaluation” done. It was literally invaluable to hear what an editor thought of my work. But I want to know what the readers think. What would the readers change about the story? What would they like to see more of? I entered my novel in a few competitions and it was very interesting to hear what people thought.
I’d time the release better
The Manhattan Mishap is a beach read through and through. However, it published in November. Brr. Not very beachy. Even for my new Los Angeles lifestyle. I mean, it’s December and people here are still going to the beach. But I want everyone to be able to read it at the beach. And growing up in Canada, I know that going to the beach to sunbathe and read is a no-go outside of the summer months.
